I just got the ChinesePod App and I went and downloaded several lessons. Then, when I try to play the audio for those lessons, the wheel spins around for 10-15 seconds before the audio is ready, presumably downloading the lesson again from the internet. To confirm, when I put the phone into airplane mode, if I try to click on a “downloaded” lesson it says “Please connect to the internet to access this lesson”. Why aren’t the lessons actually being successfully downloaded - I need offline access.

I just downloaded an audio lesson on the Android version of the App (Please let me know if you encountered this problem on iOS), and I could listen to the lesson with airplane mode without any trouble.
May I suggest that you go to “Settings”, click on “Manage downloads” to make sure that the download process was indeed complete?
