How to order with diet restrictions?

Hi ChinesePod team, my question is this:

If you are eating out or eating with friends/ family, how would you say these phrases; I’m allergic to " ", I don’t eat meat because I am vegetarian/ vegan, or I prefer not to have " " ?

There are lessons on this in the archives. Try doing a search either in the vocabulary or the general search box.

Hi Alanna,

For allergies, we say 我对__过敏 [wǒ duì__guò mǐn] (I am allergic to ___) or 我吃__会过敏 [wǒ chī __huì guò mǐn] (I get allergies if I eat __)

If you are vegan/vegetarian, you can say 我是素食 [wǒ shì sù shí] or 我不吃肉 [wǒ bù chī ròu] (I am a vegetarian)//(I don’t eat meat)

Hope this helps!

Here are the phrases you requested:

I’m allergic to "[allergen]":
    我对「[过敏原]」过敏。
    Wǒ duì "[guòmǐnyuán]" guòmǐn.

Replace “[过敏原]” with the specific allergen you’re allergic to, such as 花生 (huāshēng - peanuts), 牛奶 (niúnǎi - milk), 虾 (xiā - shrimp), etc.

I don’t eat meat because I am vegetarian:
    我不吃肉,因为我是素食者。
Wǒ bù chī ròu, yīnwèi wǒ shì sùshí zhě.

I don't eat meat because I am vegan:
    我不吃任何动物制品,因为我是纯素食者。
Wǒ bù chī rènhé dòngwù zhìpǐn, yīnwèi wǒ shì chúnsùshí zhě.

I prefer not to have "[ingredient]":
    我宁愿不要「[食材]」。
    Wǒ nìngyuàn bùyào "[shícái]".

Replace “[食材]” with the specific ingredient you want to avoid or prefer not to have, such as 辣椒 (làjiāo - chili peppers), 蒜 (suàn - garlic), etc.
