I hear yua but it’s written yue.
I can hear yuen but it’s written yuan
Is this a mistake?
Hi Philips,
Unfortunately, it is not a mistake. These are the spelling rules that were created when pinyin was created. However, you are correct that the two pronunciations sound different than their spelling. “Yue” ends with an “-eh” sound and Yuan ends with an “-en” sound, rather than “-an”.
Cheers!
