how to say j, q, x

I’m having troubles trying to pronounce these letters in pinyin, can anyone help me with it?

Hi Alanna,

The ‘j’ sound is pronounced very similarly to the English letter ‘j’. But instead of extending the entire letter, the Chinese pronunciation only takes the first sound.
The sound for ‘q’ is a bit more tricky. You can think of it as the English pronunciation for ‘ch’.
For ‘x’, imagine the sound for the English letter ‘s’, and then push your tongue down completely so that it is touching the bottom of your mouth.

Remember that if a ‘u’ follows these letters, it has a ü sound!

Check out our pinyin lesson for these sounds:

Hope this helps!
