Hi @YuQinCai, @Constance_Fang @Fiona and the ChinesePod team, my question is this:
When you say “一杯”,the tone is yi1 bei1, or yi4 bei1?
Thank you!

Great question! The 一 turns into a 4th tone when it comes before another 1st tone. So it’s yì bēi. In terms of writing the Pinyin, it’s correct either way.
There’s an Elementary lesson on this is you want some more review and see some of the other tone change rules.
I think the tone of “一杯” is yi4 bei1
The tone of 一杯 correct one is “yi1 bei1” , but some Chinese also pronounced yi4 bei1
Hi all,
When you look into a dictionary, you would find out that 一 is in 1st tone. But when we are in a conversation, there are tone changes.
1st + 1st → 4th + 1st
一杯 [yī bēi] → [yì bēi] one cup of
1st + 2nd → 4th + 2nd
一年 [yī nián] → [yì nián] one year
1st + 3rd → 4th + 3rd
一秒 [yī miǎo] → [yì miǎo] one second
1st + 4th → 2nd + 4th
一次 [yī cì] → [yí cì] one time
yes, I also noticed that changes, so it is kind of pronunciation rule?when yi go with other words then change the tone.
Yes, there’s some series here that I watched and they were pretty useful. Will have to find the link again. It’s something that even advanced learners do wrong, according to my Chinese buddy. It’s all about practice and getting used.
