What is the idea behind adjectives in names, nicknames etc

Suggested Difficulty (Elementary etc): ____elementary
Video or Audio: ____Video
Lesson Idea: Hi @Constance_Fang and Team,

I have come across names with adjectives prefixed, such as da, xiao, lao etc. Is there any significance and specific logic with adding such adjectives. I think this would be a good discussion as to how this is done in mandarin.

Thanks,
Srikanth.

Hello Srikanth,

Often they are used when talking about someone older or younger. It’s not intended to be mean, its a kind nickname with reference to ones age. Da, lao is for someone older, xiao would be for someone younger. We actually just recorded a lesson touching on this! We should get it rolled out soon. Thanks for your question and suggestion.

Adjectives are used in names which will change the definition of that word, so they are important. Use these words simultaneously.
