When to use 和 and when to use 也?

Hi @YuQinCai, @Constance_Fang @Fiona and the ChinesePod team, my question is this:

I hear 也 in Chinese speech and try to use it in the same way myself but apparently I am not getting it right because my Chinese teacher tells me to avoid 也 and use 和 instead, as it will usually not be wrong. Any tips on this grammar point? Could it be a good topic for a 请问 lesson? 谢谢

和 and 也 are not interchangeable. 也 means “also”. For example,
I also watched that movie. (我也看了那部电影) so 也 is an adverb here.
和 is a conjunction, for example, we can say:
Frank and I went swimming yesterday (Frank和我昨天去游泳了)
You cannot say “Frank也我昨天去游泳了”.

Hi Jeremy,
Thanks for your help here. My questiions is 和 and 也 can be used togther? can I say, Frank昨天也和/跟我去游泳了? thanks.

Hi Grace,

Yes, you can either say “Frank昨天也和我去游泳了” or “Frank昨天也跟我去游泳了”.

Thank you Jeremy, Happy New Year!

Thanks. The same to you!
