Where to properly start?

Hi ChinesePod team, my question is this:
I am 17 years old and am eager to learn chinese but am confused where to properly start my foundation in mandarin chinese and how to organize my noetbook so that i can effective learn chinese;do you think its ok to learn pinyin while learning a little bit of the chinese characters?

Hi there,

Yes, of course. Learn pronunciations and pinyin take more than one day. So, yes, I think it’s fine to learn them while learning some characters. As for how to start, I would suggest you to start from daily conversations (https://www.chinesepod.com/courses/1) because when you really use the language in your daily life you are motivated to learn more. After topics about daily life, choose some topics that you are interested in. (https://www.chinesepod.com/courses)

As for how to organize your notebook, I only have two suggestions:

  1. Prepare one notebook for character writing. Learning Chinese characters does need many and many practices.
    practice

  2. Prepare another notebook for notes you learn from the lessons. But remember, keep your notes with some example sentences because the best way to learn a language is to learn its vocabulary and grammar from contexts.

Chinesepod is a great resource, but start with a live native speaker teacher who can help you learn pronunciation.
